Sound research
In this i am going to research the different types of sound used in films and what effect they can have and how i am going to take advantage of the uses of them in my opening scene.
Foley track
|
The use of foley tracks in modern day filming and why it came to be very useful is because lets say you film a long shot of two characters speaking or doing something like hitting a wall or door the camera may not be able to pick up all the sounds that is being emitted so by using a foley track you can use that to make the same sounds as to what was happening and maybe to a higher quality. This is very useful in filming as it can intensify the use of diegetic sounds that are being used in the scene. Also, with that if there is extra sounds or distorted sounds with the use of foley tracks you can get artists to record themselves saying the same thing and input the sound which would make the quality of what's said be more clear and better.
|
Diegetic sound
|
Diegetic sound is the sound we hear the natural sound, the ambient sound for example the sound of a car going by is diegetic as well stuff such as a fork dropping on the ground. Diegetic sound in film is very important as it makes the movie more realistic as if they weren't to be any diegetic sound it would make it unrealistic and not that clear to the audience what is happening and if any background tracks were to play over it it wouldn't be that effective as it would takeaway the realness of the scene.
In the video on the left you can see the difference between the 2 scenes without non-diegetic sound and with it which shows the effect you can bring about when combining both of them. In this with the diegetic sound it doesn't build up much adrenaline with what's going on and seems a bit boring but with the non-diegetic sound added on you can see that it makes the diegetic sound come out a bit more and makes the audience be on there toes with the increasing tempo and increase sound level as the scene goes on. |
Non-diegetic sound
|
Non-diegetic sound is the sound that is put in in the background or added on such as high tempo music in the background to give the scene a good tempo or too build up anticipation and adrenaline for a scene. The sound in the soundtrack on the left is perfect for a thriller/horror with a bit of action movies as it starts of with a low tempo and gets gradually higher and has a more aggressive instrumental than normal songs with high tempo which can be good for a thriller type or horror type as it could build adrenaline up for the audience and be able to make them guess that something is about to happen with the growing tempo. Also, non-diegetic sound can be used to set the tone of the film and the mood with the implementation of different soundtracks in different tones in accordance to what is happening.

Actor research
Jason Statham born 26 July 1967 is an English actor, producer, martial artist, and former diver.
The Mechanic (2011) -Jason Statham as Arthur Bishop is mechanic a trained contract killer. Expendables (2010) - Jason Statham as Lee Christmas The Italian Job (2003) - Jason Statham as "Handsome Rob", the team's "premier wheelman" and a ladies man. |
One thing all these roles have in common is that they all put Jason Statham in the middle of action and let him fight and be the main character that leads stuff, yet he still maintains his calm and confident yet intimidating look which makes him so perfect on screen while acting as the roles he is in for example Mechanic he shows why he is perfect for being a contract killer he is cold-blooded and only shows a bit of emotion in one scene when someone close dies to him. However, him showing a bit of emotion shows the characters human side in which he portrays really well.
Furthermore, another reason why Jason Statham is better suited to action type roles is because he isn't the tallest (1.78 m) and he has a well-built physical state which automatically makes him look in a better state for a action role as he generally looks more compact and strong which is appealing for people searching for actors for an action movie as it allows them to be more flexible to finding stunt doubles as he is close to average male height and allows them to be able to more with the actors and what they do. |
James Dornan (born 1 May 1982) is a Northern Irish actor, model, and musician. He played Axel von Fersen in Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette, Sheriff Graham Humbert in the ABC series Once Upon a Time and serial killer Paul Spector in the BBC Two crime drama series The Fall. The reason why James Dornan makes such a good actor is because due to his looks he can play the role in which he can deceive people especially females. Also, the roles he played in before are mainly when he is the protagonist which makes sense as he has the natural presence of someone who is a good person from his looks and actions. However, int eh BBC Two crime drama series The Fall he played a serial killer 'Paul Spector' this is a change from the normal characters he plays as it shows him as a completely different person and his looks that he can use to deceive people is put in role there which makes him such an effective actor while in a role such as a serial killer in which they hide their true identity.

Liam John Neeson, (born 7 June 1952) is an Irish actor. Best known for his role in Taken trilogy as Bryan Mills. Bryan "Bry" Mills is a retired CIA operative. After becoming divorced due to the strain his career put on his marriage, he decided that family was more important to him than his job. Liam Neeson plays in a retired CIA operative a highly skilled position and in the movie filled with highly action filled scenes with fighting and lots of different stunts of jumping out of windows to running and going from one building to another. The reason why a person like Liam Neeson makes a good actor for these sorts of roles is because he has the family man look as he seems like he is 40-50 years old man and done everything he could've in his life, this helps him with the role because it helps him seem like any other person his age or in his same role type but as he plays these roles although he has a normal family man role to him he can also participate in the heavy action filled roles on the side as well which makes him such a great actor while in action in the movies.

Scarlett Johansson (born November 22, 1984) is an American actress, model, and singer. She has played the Marvel comic book character Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and is set to reprise the role in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) as well as recently playing the main character Lucy in the film Lucy 2014. The character Black Widow as well as Lucy are mainly characters based in the middle of the action especially in Lucy, Scarlett Johansson portrays these roles very well because as well as being very beautiful she uses her looks and her power in her role to intimidate the character she is against and to reinstate her place in the power hierarchy. Furthermore, Scarlett Johansson is very well-suited for a action role as she is the average female height (1.6m) which means it can be easier for her to find a stunt double, her body type being slim allows her to be able to do more stuff than other actors and gives her the variety in her roles.

Tobin Bell (born Joseph Henry Tobin, Jr.; August 7, 1942) is an American film and television character actor, known for his portrayal of John Kramer/Jigsaw of the Saw film series. His most notable acting was in Saw film series in which he played Jigsaw (John Kramer) the role of an civil engineer who teaches lessons through different methods for those who take life granted. He suits this type of role well as he is an old man and is seen fragile however, not everyone would be capable of doing what he is doing in the style he does it, which not only surprises the audience but allows him to excel in the methods of portraying his character and history which makes the series even more successful.

Genre research
Genre research (brief history and codes and conventions).
ActionAction film is a film genre in which one or more heroes are thrust into a series of challenges that typically include physical feats, extended fight scenes, violence, and frantic chases. Action films tend to feature a resourceful character struggling against incredible odds, which include life-threatening situations, a villain, or a pursuit which generally concludes in victory for the hero.

Director research
Martin Scorsese -November 17, 1942 (age 72), Martin Charles Scorsese is an American director, producer, screenwriter, actor, and film historian.
|
Goodfellas (1990) - This is a film writter, produced and directed by Martin Scorsese. The overall genre for this film is gangster however, gangster is generally seen as a sub-genre of action. The film narrates the rise and fall of Lucchese crime family associate Henry Hill (the first-person narrator in the film) and his friends over a period from 1955 to 1980. The Wolf of Wall Street -Another film directed by Martin Scorsese , this is a biopic film meaning that it dramatizes the life of an actual person or people. This is a biopic film however, it has quite a few elements of action and tension building scenes in this film. The screenplay by Terence Winter is adapted from the memoir of the same name by Jordan Belfort and recounts from Belfort's perspective his career as a stockbroker in New York City and how his firm Stratton Oakmont engaged in rampant corruption and fraud on Wall Street that ultimately led to his downfall. Gangs of New York - Film directed by Martin Scorsese set in New York 1846 this film is a crime fiction drama which is also can be seen to be a sub-genre of action and include many elements of action such as high tempo fighting and other elements that get the audience to be on the edge of there seats. This films about the two principal issues of the era in New York were Irish immigration to the city and the ongoing Civil War. |
All these 3 films above have been directed by Martin Scorsese and have had huge success in making money. One thing they all have in common is that although they do not have the same genre or the genre my film that i want is going for they all contain elements of thriller and action. They are all very fast-paced, high tempo films and have a lot of scenes in which the audience is on the edge of there seats. Furthermore, from these films while making mine i can learn that even without many gruesome scenes of alot of fighting you can get your audience to be on the edge of there seats and also build tension you can do this in many ways for example adding different types of diegetic sound appropriate to the scene. As well as that , another way in which Martin Scorsese allowed me to gain more knowledge in how to direct a good action/thriller movie is by the use of props with normal stuff such as in Goodfellas the bin and rubbish in which they camouflage what has happened to the guy leaving the audience wandering what has happened to him and what kind of state they have left him which can allow characters to grow in power in the audiences eye. As well as that, one more thing that Martin Scorsese made me consider using in my film was voiceovers and narrations. This is because narrations make everything more clear and can construct two different types of personalities and characteristics for a character before and after.
Tony Scott was an English film director and producer. Was born on June 21, 1944, unfortunately died by committing suicide by throwing himself off a bridge in August 19, 2012
|
Tony Scott- The A-Team- action/comedy - The film tells the story "The A-Team", a Special Forces team imprisoned for a crime they did not commit, who escape and set out to clear their names. This was produced by Tony Scott and is a very high tempo action film containing a lot of visual explosives such as cars, rockets fired from planes and many army type weapons used. Furthermore, in the A-team alot of diegetic sound is used for effect such as car crashing noises, sound of helicopters, these are all used for the same reason to build tension between the audience also this allows the audience to personally feel and sympathize for the character in that scene.
|
|
Unstoppable – thriller, drama , action film - The film, loosely based on the real-life CSX 8888 incident, tells the story of a runaway freight train, and the two men (Washington and Pine) who attempt to stop it. This was produced and directed by Tony Scott it is a movie about

|
Enemy of the State is a 1998 American spy-thriller about a group of rogue U.S. National Security Agency agents who kill a U.S. Congressman and try to cover up the murder. |
Unlike in Martin Scorsese's films Tony Scott focused more on the effects of diegetic sounds such as the sound of a gun or screaming this is really effective in a movie because it can place the audience in the shoes of the character. Furthermore, in all of these films apart from enemy of the state they use narrations from a character this allows the character like is some of Scorsese's films to construct 2 different representations of characters. Also, in most of Tony Scotts film there is a lot less bloody scenes and more scenes with the protagonist revealing less about what they're against. One way in which the layout of Tony Scott's films can help me is by allowing me to do what he does with the villain and that is to hide him and reveal more and more as you get further down the narrative of the film. Furthermore, another way Tony Scotts films can influence me is in not exaggerating the diegetic sounds and where and when it is most effective such as the drop of a pin in a dark alleyway being really loud to help build tension. Additionally, another way in which Tony Scotts films can influence is by adding non-diegetic sounds when possible to relay the emotion of the character more.
Typography
The first picture is from Captain America The Winter Soldier the typography used in this is very bold writing underneath matching the same texture of the lines captain america is going through. Also, the other writing is on top of the bold 'HENRY JACKMAN' is written in the same font but less bold which can suggest that captain america is facing an enemy and is getting through them all trying to get rid of them. Furthermore, from this typography i felt as if the less bold fonts and the stripes on captain Americas chest matched meaning that, that is what he represents and stands for and that the thicker writing and the lines are his enemies he is getting rid of. The pros of our team using this for our opening scene would that it creates a binary opposition of something vs another thing which would be good as it can give meaning and allow the audience to sympathize with the character. However, the cons of using this typography would be that we would need more time to implement it into the start and Captain America represents a whole nation and mainly good people however, our characters are only going to be representing themselves and we want to audience to sympathize and understand and we also want our character to be more secretive so giving away that at the start could be useful but can give away a lot to the audience so we might not use it in our opening sequence.
|
This picture is from the film Juno which is a romance and comedy type film. This sort of typography suggests a lot to the audience as it shows a clear writing 'FOX SEARCHLIGHT ...' and underneath writes 'presents' this is really effective as it can show the audience a lot for example can show that as she looks like a young teenager the writing can suggest that she is fighting and trying to become an adult whereas still having childlike attributes holding her back. Also, it can show her as being a bit abnormal as she is walking around with a big drink in her hand on the side which is not something everyone does and the writing can suggest she is trying to fit in with others but is struggling. However, the pros of using this typography aren't much as we are trying to make a Action/Thriller movie and this is for a comedy genre which wouldn't be effective to the audience as it is very bright which doesn't go with the theme of thrillers as they tend to be a bit more secretive and with darker colours such as black and red so consequently we wouldn't be using this sort of typography.
|
Alien isolation is a survival horror and this sort of typography is very good for it's genre because it shows clear writring on top in bold writing 'ALIEN' in white but underneath in a more light grey smaller font which can suggest to the audience the fight between aliens and peoples survival alone against the aliens. However, this sort of typography would be good for me as it doesn't reveal too much to the audience and that can allow the audience to make all sorts of guesses but in the same thriller/horror context which can mean that i can use this sort of background and writing to portray this. However, it wouldn't be too effective in mine as it isn't about anything like 'aliens' that are quite unknown it is about a character and his job and struggle while doing it which means i might need something with more pictures to illustrate abit of what he does.
|
This is from 'the rocky horror picture show' which is shockingly from the intro a comedy. This typography is effective in one way for that genre as it is a very thick, bold childlike font and a bit smudged which seems as if it is written a bit childishly and it can show the whole plot of people not acting there age and being a bit clumsy also careless. This sort of typography's cons can be that it can be a bit to childish for my audience which is 12+ and may make my film less serious. However, if i got it to be less bold and less to look as the ink was dropping it could look more thriller-like and seem better as it could look more sophisticated like the Alien isolation's writing.
|
The final typography in film i looked at was Se7en which is a thriller movie this typography is very impressive as it shows two different writings one nice bold something that looks as if it is written in a typewriter whereas, the other writing seems to be handwritten and seems very neat. This can suggest a lot to the audience it can create a binary opposition between police vs serial criminals as normally the time se7en was set in detectives and police generally wrote documents up in typewriters, whereas, the handwritten part can be for normal people as well as criminals and the picture behind suggesting criminals. Therefore, the typography in se7en can show police vs criminals. The typography used in se7en is the way i would like to layout the font and other aspects like as it shows sophisticated writing and shows binary opposition which i would also like to create in my movie between the main character and the people after him as i think this would best describe the situation he would be facing in the overall film.
Market research
Why do people conduct market research?
Most people conduct market research to keep up with market trends and see what different types of audiences like. Also, they use this to see what types of genres suit what age group and set there audience according to that. The point of market research is to see how to improve what they're doing and get ideas of how to make it more appealing to their audience by getting the opinion of their audience. Also, they use it to understand customer needs and wants as this would help them create a movie that can suit them all.
In our survey we didn't add a question about the age of the people who answered the surveys as we only gave it out to people in the sixth form and they are all aged between 16-19 and we felt that 16-19 would be close to the target audience we are going for 15+ or even lower 12+ and try to see what they like and how they prefer their movies.
We conducted market research to see how our demographic that we focus on likes and wants to see in a action/thriller movie. We've got 52 responses for our survey. This is the link for our survey : https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MY85SHW

BBFC
|
The BBFC seperate and categorise films suitable for audiences aged 4 and over 18 meaning suitable for adults. They categorise films like this as to the content inside it and do this so that it they can protect children from unsuitable and even harmful content in films and videos and to give consumers information they might need about a particular film or video before deciding whether or not to view it, the BBFC examines and age rates films and videos before they are released. This independent scrutiny prior to release ensures the highest possible level of protection and empowerment.
How they decide on this : http://www.bbfc.co.uk/what-classification/how-does-classification-work "We watch films and videos all the way through and award an age rating and insight to each one. We reach an age rating by applying the standards and criteria contained in our Classification Guidelines which can be downloaded below. Typically, two examiners view a film for theatrical release. In most cases a Senior Examiner will confirm the examiners’ recommendation. But if the Examiners are in any doubt or fail to agree, or if important policy issues are involved, the work may be seen by other members of the Board up to, and including, the Director and Presidential team. Occasionally we need to take specialist advice about the legal acceptability of film content or its potential for harm. The same process exists for DVDs and Blu-rays though generally these are seen by one Examiner. However, opinions from other Examiners may be required for more difficult works. We look at issues such as discrimination, drugs, horror, dangerous and easily imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, and violence when making decisions. The theme of the work is also an important consideration. We also consider context, the tone and likely impact of a work on the potential audience. The release format of a work has an impact on classification. Our decisions on the age rating of DVDs and Blu-rays can occasionally be stricter than at the cinema because there is a higher risk of underage viewing in the home and a greater potential for watching scenes out of context." |
My films genre is probably going to be rewarded 12A or 15+ which is normal for my film as it isn't going to have a lot of gruesome parts in it which can be disturbing to the younger audience. Also, i think it could be 12A as there is a bit of foul language used but not alot which i think allows it to be within the region of 12A and 15+.
For example, Taken 3 the most recent Taken film is rated at 12A, this film contains foul language as well as lots of fighting in a lot of scenes and has bloody scenes. Therefore, as we are doing our film from getting our inspiration from taken this allows our film to be more 12A then 15 as it isn't going to contain many gruesome scenes which can show that it would be good for that age group and above. However, we may choose to make our film 15 if we include any gruesome overly explicit details like in se7en. Se7en is a 15+ film for older teens because it contains gruesome parts and very disturbing scenes which can effect people who watch it at a younger age. Also, it has alot of foul language and explicit scenes which put it at 15+.

Genre
Genre - is the classification of any media text into a category or type.
Genre's tend to have identifiable codes and conventions which have developed particular expectations which may either be fulfilled or denied/diverted by the producer. When considering genre you should also consider the typicality and subversion, as well as sub-genres or generic hybrids. |
Audiences and Genres:
Audiences develop an understanding that certain expectations may be fulfilled and they may find pleasure in predicting what will happen next. Audiences know what to expect from a genre but at the same time want some variations to prevent dissatisfaction and even boredom. Institutions and Genre: -Money -Producers and actors getting a name |
Genre theorist 1: Film theorist Rick Altman argues that there is no such thing as "pure" genre anymore. Genre is progressive, in that it will always change.
Considers genre in 2 ways : Semantic & syntactic Semantic - this is concerned with the conventions of the genre that communicate to the audience such as characters, locations, props, music, shooting style and other signifier. Syntactic - This is concerned with the relations between these elements and the structure of narrative genres. E.g. In a romantic comedy we expect the potential lovers to began by not liking each other. Applying this theory : Semantic : Thriller, Action -Superhero -Villains -Dark places -High tempo music -Guns, explosions, weapons Syntactic : superhero saves woman from villain they fall in love. Hero and villain have a lot in common but share different views. |
Genre theorist 3: Steve Neale
Declares that 'genres are instances of repetition and difference' he adds that 'difference is absolutely essential to the economy of genre'; mere repetition would not attract an audience. Genre theorist 4: John Hartley Texts often exhibit the conventions of more than one genre. ' the same text can belong to different genres in different countries or times.' Genre theorist 5: David Buckingham Traditionally, genres tended to be regarded as fixed forms, but contemporary theory emphasises that both their forms and functions are dynamic. Genre theorist 6: David Bordwell 'any theme may appear in any genre' Genre theorist 7: John Fiske "Genre attempts to structure some order into a wide range of texts and meanings that circulate in our culture for the conveniences of both producers and audiences“ Genre theorist 8: Kate Wales “Genre is …an intertextual concept” |
Narrative
In this post I am going to be talking about what narrative is and the different types of theory's within the Narrative.
|
Narrative = Plot + Story
Plot – everything visibly and audibly present in the text; what the reader can observe. Story – all events of the narrative, both explicit and implicit; what the reader understands. Narrative –is a chain of events in a cause and effect relationship in time and space. |
Narrative theorist 1 : Tzvetan Todorov:
Equilibrium - everything is peaceful and harmonious. Disruption - Something happens that disrupts the peace and needs to be sorted out. Recognition of disruption- heroes overcome obstacles. New Equilibrium - peace and harmony is restored Applying this theory - Batman : Dark Knight Equilibrium - living peacefully with parents Disruption - Parents getting killed Recognition of disruption - Batman(Bruce Wayne) trains to get revenge also helps his city. Repairing the damage - Hero locks up villians New equilibrium - City lives peacefully with Batman watching over. |
Narrative theorist 2: Vladimir Propp
He felt that narrative structure can be determined by the roles of the characters. He said that 'character roles help us understand the constructed nature of the narrative.' Villain - struggles with the hero Hero - reacts to the donor Dispatcher - sends hero on the mission The false hero(antihero) - claims to be hero but is evil Donor - Aids the hero Princess - Mainly the reward for the hero / victim of villain and punishes villain Father - rewards hero Applying this theory - Batman : Dark Knight : Villain - The Joker Hero - Batman (Bruce Wayne) Dispatcher - Civilians The False Hero(antihero) - Harvey Dent Donor - Alfred Princess - Rachel Dawes Father - None (Police Officer) |
Narrartive theorist 3 : Claude Levi-Strauss
He suggested that the production of meaning depended on the concept of binary oppositions, for example conflict between 2 qualities e.g. police vs terrorists and weak vs strong. Applying this theory : Batman:Dark Knight Rich vs poor - Batman vs Bane Good vs Evil - Bane vs Batman Terrorists vs police - Bane and his army vs police Technology vs physical power - Batman vs Bane Technique vs Strength - Batman vs Bane |
Narrative theorist 4: Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes argued that the narrative is told through a series of codes that are used to control information which goes to the audience. Enigma codes and Action codes. Enigma code : narrative devices that present a puzzle or riddle to the audience. Action code: a narrative device by which a resolution is produced through action. Applying this theory: Batman:Dark Knight Rises Enigma code : Bane at the start the audience does not know who he is or what he represents seems like a revolution. Action code : Batman stopping Bane from taking over Gotham. |

Opening scene analysis
Se7en is a film about two detectives Detective Mills(Brad Pitt) and Detective Somerset(Morgan Freeman) chasing after a serial killer who is killing people after the seven deadly sins. The opening scene does not include any long shots of the setting; you would assume that the things are taking place are happening in someone's home, or in an office as the props are what you would typically find in these places you can see this in various close-ups of the character writing setting stuff up but you never see his face which still keeps the mystery of who the character is which still keeps the audience engaged in what he is planning and the key details of the plot through the pictures and the notes. As well as that in this scene from the props you can guess what sort of work he is doing, for example through all the writing, pictures and filing you can think that he might be a detective trying to put a series of events into one. Also, all these props and the work he is doing is in a extreme close-up which creates tension with the audience as they do not know who is doing it and what they're doing as there isn't a lot of time allowed to analyse what each thing is saying.
Furthermore, the lighting in every scene in this is quite low key, this can suggest to the audience that this person creating the file can be dangerous or whatever is in the file can be dangerous. As well as, that most of the scenes are mainly black and white however, when it comes to the pictures it has a mixture of both colours but always unequal distribution of both colours putting into question the purity of those characters. The editing in Se7en starts off slowly and gets faster cutting from one scene to another quicker than the others. This is a good way to edit because it can suggest to the audience that the character creating these files can be running out of time or that he is getting hurt mentally the more he works on those files and also suggests that it is going to be a tense film from the editing. Furthermore, the there aren't any pans or any sort of camera movement mainly in this as the camera always focuses on one thing to another , for example the writing , man scraping off his fingerprints and the pictures.
The writing in the film shows one written with a typewriter format whereas, the other one is in more of a normal handwritten style this can suggest a fight between two things for example detectives vs criminals as it is written with a typewriter which can suggest the creation of files and the handwritten format can suggest criminals or corruption within the detective force.
