Rough cut - 1
This is our rough cut for when we filmed for the second time, we didn't have our first rough cut to show as we deleted it when we finished filming completely and only had the 2nd rough cut available to show.

What went well with our video and what could've been improved?
One thing that i felt went good for our rough cut was that we had a lot of good establishing shots and introduced the area in which we were filming clear to the audience and what type of environment it is going to be in. As well as that, i think the intro of the establishing shots were a bit too long i think it could've been shortened a bit more to give the Ugi (1st character introduced) more time in the opening sequence to give more to the audience about his personality what type of person he is to give the audience an idea of why he might get attacked and think of possible reasons to it. Furthermore, one scene i liked in our rough cut was towards the end the last shot the POV this is one scene i felt was quite good as it showed more as to what the character felt and allowed the audience to see what sort of situation and state he was left in just by the movement and actions of Ugi.
Additionally, one thing that i am sure could've improved in the rough cut was the fight scene, this is because the fight scene was not practised much and was mainly improvised on the day and as you can see during the fight scene there is no sync in there moves and seems quite unrealistic as the fighting seems fake and as if they do not want to fight each other. As well as that, another scene which could've been improved is that the 2 characters who attacked Ugi could've been heard talking more to the audience as when watching it from the audiences point of view you do not know what much of it is about and why it is happening which can be bad in a films opening sequence as most films need to be more intriguing and interesting for the audience to carry on watching. On top of all that, we also had problems with a lot of people in the crowd blocking our way when we were recording. This was a big problem as you can barely see the action that our actor was performing and can't see much due to people passing in front of the camera while we were recording as it was a fairly busy place. Furthermore, another problem i felt we had was with the background track as we couldn't keep a constant tempo of filming so finding a soundtrack was hard and after viewing it we decided not to add any as we wanted to re-film. Also, with the sound another problem was the sound effects that we added this was a problem as it sounded a bit exaggerated and quite loud so for the last filming we felt that we needed to add more subtle effects for the actions that are performed during the filming. Overall, we found this a good recording as we set up the basis of the intro very well and were able to get some of the tempo of the recording up to the standard of an action/thriller genre film and this allowed us to see what type of things we need to improve and what we can do to improve the areas we were weaker in, in portraying the genre of our film. As well as that, it also gave us more ideas of how to add extra to the parts in our filming in which we did better in. |
Improvements
What we planned to add on and takeaway from the rough cut and add on to the final video:
- One thing we wanted to takeaway was too make the alleyway we were in, in a bit more isolated area so we have less disruptions and people going through which can make it more realistic and real to the audience.
- One thing we decided to add was to make the introduction of our main character Ugi longer and more importantly base him in a place which resembles more what type of person he is. For this we decided the arcade would be a suitable place as it can show his natural competitiveness and to isolate from the other people in there showing that he is different to the audience.
- A further improvement we thought we could have is to make the build up to the confrontation longer by making a chase scene to where they meet each other or where one gets caught or cannot go anywhere else. We thought this would be an good improvement as we feel that would build up more adrenaline and make it more tense for the audience watching which can allow us to conform to the stereotypical makings of a action/thriller film which is seen as a quite high tempo start in most films after a slow beginning.
- Also, after making the first version of our final opening sequence, when we sent it out to get feedback we noticed that the soundtrack that is playing in the background is too loud and in some cases doesn't allow the antagonist Ugis voice be heard to the audience. After getting all this feedback, we decided to re-edit and make sure the soundtrack gets lowered when the Ugi speaks.
My role - Director/Co-Editor/Actor/Cameraman
Directing
Throughout, each of the filming I was the director. For this role I had to revise my camera shots, go over my shot list, script, storyboard, shooting schedule and risk assessment. These were essentials to go over as these were the foundation on which we were filming on and the easiest way to film efficiently. Also, as a director not only do you have to revise and know what you have to do you also have to look after your actors and your crew that is helping you film for this I made sure that all my team members were fully hydrated and also had a break in between to grab something to eat so no one felt tired or ill while filming.
Furthermore, as a director one thing i changed while filming from the rough cut to our final piece was to make the filming at a more open area in which people where less to obstruct the view of the camera and mess up our recording because not only did we have to redo scenes in our rough cut due to this we also had to refilm and only had one battery which ran out in about 3 hours of use which made us restricted to a time limit as well. As well as that, as a director in the rough cut i didn't pay a lot of attention to the focusing of the camera in shots because we had auto-focus on. However, due to this most shots that we took which moving the camera were out of focus and we were not able to use and did not look good quality. Therefore, in the final videoing due to the group members not being able to attend I took leadership of the cinematography with Berkay Cetinkaya in the last filming and we decided to share the role of directing as in the first scene i was acting while he was directing and the other way round for him i was the cameraman and director. |
Editing
For the editing of our final video i helped our editor Berkay Cetinkaya in finalizing the details of the opening sequence i done this via Teamviewer and Skype in which i was able to speak to Berkay as well as control the screen where i wanted to input my ideas and help with the decisions being made.

This is the final form of our editing on how it looks on the editing program Sony Vegas Pro. During the editing of our filming we wanted to start it off slow and increase the pace of the film gradually for this we had already found a soundtrack (can also be found in planning section under 'sound design') that suits the action/thriller genre as it starts off with a electric instrumental with a bit of bass and in the middle fastens up. Furthermore, as we couldn't make the soundtracks ourselves as we weren't that good at making our own soundtracks we had to make sure the cropping of scenes and the general filming of the opening sequence had to match the soundtrack or we would have to find other ones which matched it. But, luckily with the fast pace cuts during the second part of the sequence we were able to make it match well and it sounded quite decent with our opening sequence.

Editing - Colour enhancement
|
One thing we worked on when editing was that when filming to colours looked really plain and dull, due to this we thought it would be a good idea to enhance the colours on the scenes to make them seem more lively and more intriguing for the audience. For this on the editing program Vegas Pro we used Magic bullet looks where you can choose the different type of colour enhanced background you want. For this we picked 'Vibrant'. We picked 'Vibrant' because we felt this made the colours stand out more and look lively and this is the type of lighting and colour we wanted lively and to stand out as most action films have colours and backgrounds which look appealing to the audience. As well as that, the addition of the 'Vibrant' magic bullet look as well as being to make it look more lively, we also used it to make it look more sophisticated and give it a well refurbished cinematic look.

Editing - Credits
Cameraman
During the filming of our first rough cut as well as being the director i also filmed a bit in-between different shots/scenes in which our cameraman was not able to film the in the style in which we wanted it to be done. From this, I learnt that with most action films like in the fast and furious trilogy or movies like Taken is that the camera is generally not always in one position and has generally different shots that allow the character and audience to share the same experiences such as tracking, handheld or POV. With this in mind in our last filming for our opening scene I made sure me and the other cameraman on that day Berkay Cetinkaya revised and practised the different shots such as track and handheld mainly as we didn't have access to a dolly or something of that kind. Also, in our rough cut we had many problems with auto-focus messing up the shots when looking at it on the computer to sort this we learnt how to focus the camera with manual focus and used that to film as we both found that to be far more simpler for us to film and get all the camera shots in focus. While filming the handheld/tracking shots we had to be careful while keeping our distance because due to manual focus if we got to close or left him to far away it can be seen as out of focus so we tried to keep the distance equal in both scenes at the very start and when he enters the garden bit before he gets the gun.
